Good post Todd. I agree with your points on Greene and Larsson. I'd also like to add that I could see a difference in the line-up without Ponikarovsky. Goes to show how important he's become so quickly. |

Thanks Steve, and I agree. With Ponikarovsky out the Devils have to mix and match some lines and it really messes the chemistry and production up. |

Todd Cordell: Devils get shut out in Long Island, Parise good to go vs NYR, other notes - Todd.Cordell
good write up, but we are used to that
i thought we looked good at the start, looked like we had our legs and were creating chances, but the second islanders got their legs and started shooting and got their 1st powerplay we totally fell apart and didnt match the intensity, and we didnt seem to care about the game, like we took the isles lightly, we cant have that happen at this time of year
brodeur and the pk were the only positives yesterday, giving up 1 goal should give you a very good chance in winning, we need to put pucks in the net, our top guys have gone cold, other then a disinterested caps team we have created no offense in a while, elias, kovy and to some degree parise have gone cold, you cant have that all at the same time
zidlicky had a good game, and as you noted the more he plays with us the better he looks, he has been getting the puck up and setting plays up, and getting better defensively
we need to find ways to win close games, and come out with energy during afternoon games and not take anyone for granted |

I wonder if the deadline had been today instead of last Monday if Lou still would have stood pat .. I was saying they could have really used a veteran center for that top line , Its ashame we had to trade Arnott last year .. |

I think the deadline was fine for us. It is a change in philosophy we need to make, not personnel. We aren't shooting enough and trying to make fancy offensive plays. We need to go back to simple shoot first hockey, especially against teams that are so defensively proficient. The Rangers aren't going to let us make fancy passes around their zone, no matter how hard we try.
As for Arnott. He wasn't doing much and we got a draft pick for him. Seems fine by me. |

Arnott had cement in his skates last year, this year he'd be a heavy anchor Parise and Kovalchuk would have to drag around.
The idea of Elias-Arnott-Sykora is what would interest me (and I had hoped we'd get Sykora LAST year.. oh well).. but I think Arnott and Sykora are just too slow to be able to connect with Patrick on all the back door and fancy plays like they used to. .. I think it would just be another line, nothing special. So we saved ourselves money by trading Arnott.
darn, wrote too much again. |

Gotta say, I fully admit a mis-read on Kovalchuk.
I harped on him REAL GOOD earlier in the year and infuriated some Devils fans to the point of being called a troll. To this day I still stand by the fact that I was not trolling; but just talking about how I felt on Kovalchuk.
But almost since that day back in November when I went on about him; I've been watching him as much as possible and damn...has that kid ever proved me wrong.
His contract is ridiculous, I think that's obvious, but he's busting his butt every game and leads by example one shift at a time in almost every possible statistic.
So, as I always try to do when it happens...I admit I was 100% wrong on my read on Kovalchuk from the start of the season.

First you wanted wingers, now you want a center. What is wrong with our forwards? With Zajac healthy we can match anyones forward group. Maybe we won't have the most explosive group, but we have enough offense, great size, and we have a number of elite two-way players. |

And, Bernier wasn't his usual self last night, looked so out of sorts, he doesn't look good unless he is playing with Zubrus or Poni, unfortunately. His style just doesn't mesh well with that of Elias and Sykora. |

the kid is just always positive, rarely defensive and trying to amplify a self-perception of superiority ... a pleasant, peaceful person.

Andy Greene has been great since he came back from injury. I hope he plays cause like you said we struggle big time without him. Need a better effort and not only more shots but they have to make it difficult on the goalie. We need to make Lundqvist beat us tonight not let em like we did last time. Crash the net, bump em, and screen em. This is playoff hockey time to nut up or shut up... |
